Royal Oak City of Sails 2003 Chronograph

The history of a legend
The Royal Oak was launched in 1972. At a time when ephemeral materials were all the rage and curves and rounded shapes reigned supreme, Audemars Piguet chose to swim resolutely against the trend tide by creating a luxury steel watch, the first with a truly sporting vocation. The natural character and elegance of the Royal Oak asserted themselves thanks to their totally innovative approach. Featuring a new shape - an octagonal bezel - a new material - steel fashioned like a precious metal for the first time ever - a new case design - bezel and caseback are secured by eight screws - and a new bracelet design - integrated within the watch: a legendary watch was born. Since then, the Royal Oak has been issued in many different versions, offering movements and îcomplicationsî ranging from the simplest to the most sophisticated. It has also accompanied important events by the creation of special editions such as that dedicated to the Swiss Challenge for the America's Cup 2003.

Dedicated to the America's Cup 2003
For sailors seeking to clip times to gain precious seconds, Audemars Piguet needed to provide a genuine competition watch. The result is a chronograph equipped with an innovative selfwinding mechanism, designed to meet a primary criterion: that of remaining extremely thin despite the number of available functions. With a power reserve of 40 hours, waterresistance to 50 metres and a strap fashioned from an exclusive rubber, the Royal Oak City of Sails Chronograph once again illustrates the spirit of innovation governing the Manufacture. Crafted in 950 platinum, steel or 18-carat pink gold, the Royal Oak City of Sails Chronograph features the new ultra-large îtapestry-workî pattern and, in honour of the Challenge, its hour-counter is adorned with the flamboyant Alinghi logo. In an ultimate touch of elegance, the caseback is engraved with two sailboats racing against each other.
